THE PHRASE FOOT-IN-THE-MOUTH was probably invented after observing the “no people skills” employee in action. This person might be highly skilled at all other aspects of the job, but when it comes to interaction with coworkers, customers, or management, this person is way off the mark.

He's not just honest, he's blunt. When he's sincere, he's gushy. If she's complimentary, it sounds phony. When she's in a hurry, she's abrupt. It's not surprising that the “no people skills” employee is something of a pariah.

Human Resource personnel can learn to recognize and avoid hiring this sort. It's arguably easier to teach a “people person” how to accomplish job tasks than it is to teach a “no people skills” person how to become a “people person.” Don't despair, however, if you already have one or more of these individuals in your midst. Some experts claim these employees can learn to smooth out their rough edges. Someone will have to initiate changes, however, and that someone is probably going to be you, the manager.
